Sky Princess -

Dutch Wonderland, Lancaster PA

Sometimes, you run across something that really takes you by surprise.
Dutch Wonderland is basically a kiddie park in Amish country Pennsylvania. There is very little there for someone without small children to do. The only reason for the visit that day was to try out their little wooden coaster. I love wooden coasters, no matter how big or small.

Still... a coaster called "Sky Princess"???

From the parking lot, it looks like what you'd expect from a children's woodie.

Short, gentle drops that undulate around a small area of the park. Very cute.

Yep. "Sky Princess". You are now SURE that this is indeed a kiddie ride.

At least there are the nice trains from PTC to look forward to. Classic and comfortable, they fit kids and adults perfectly.

I climb on board, ride up the SHORT lift hill, and expect to have my one ride, add it to my list, and move on. Then the train eased over the twisting drop.

HEY, this is pretty peppy for a kiddie ride! Good speed, some laterals, and no leg-crushing ratcheting lap bars to spoil the bit of airtime in the second part of the drop. Sweet!

An absolutely beautiful example of a fan turn follows, taken at a surprisingly quick pace, considering the coaster's small size.

Small bunnyhops mean airtime, and while this one isn't big enough to make you feel like you're flying, you do get a nice zero-g induced tummy-tickle.

But the Sky Princess saves the best for last.

The train rockets into an upward spiral before returning to the station. Riders are forced to hang on, lest they be pinned to the side of the car. This is INTENSE for a kiddie ride, but by placing it at the end, the kids are already used to going fast and it isn't as frightening for them. Smart move, since almost all of the kids (and their parents) that I saw got off the coaster and ran around to get back on again. I was one of them. Almost 30 times. Seriously. It was a highlight of the trip. Who knew?
